"Delicious Jammie Dodgers Biscuits on a Colorful Plate - Close-Up"

Sobriety on a Plate

One of the things I love about attending meetings is listening to other people sharing, the meetings where people are being truly honest, truly themselves when sharing are the best as that’s when the most inspirational messages are projected. After a lot of self-reflection, observing my own mind, and getting to know how it works, I now understand that my head needs things to be in a simple but genius format for it then to be able to chew it over, and over, then actually make it into a complicated poem full of metaphors and synonyms, this may sound crazy but it works for me and keeps my totally over active brain busy and entertained.

This morning a good friend on the morning AA sunrise meeting, while sharing, created the following brilliant sentence, in an instant my brain woke up, and loved every bit of it as it had both things my head now likes more than anything, truth and humour.

“Sobriety doesn’t get handed to you on a plate in AA, well unless you’re at a face-to-face meeting and you’re helping yourself to a biscuit with your cupper.”

Ref: My friend Wayne E, AA Sunrise Meeting 11/07/2024 – Brilliant!

Life can be sweeter

In the fluorescent glow, salvation ain't silver-plated,
no easy handouts here. You fight, one day at a time,
for a sip of peace, not whiskey.

Sharing circles become battlegrounds,
where raw truths echo like clinking coffee mugs.
We raise shaky hands in promises, not toasts.

But sometimes, grace arrives,
with a smile and a plate piled high,
with buttery comfort – redemption by biscuit.

A crumb of kindness in the brutal honesty,
a reminder that even warriors need a break,
and sometimes, strength comes wrapped in a napkin.

So we take a bite, a shaky hand reaching for a future,
a little lighter, a little sweeter,
because even in sobriety's trenches,
there's room for a taste of something good.
