There’s a room in Altrincham that feels like the original “Room of Requirement” the old school room on Sylvan Grove. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings, it becomes a quiet, peaceful space for an AA Step 11 meditation meeting, on Fridays it’s a mid-morning space to drop in and stay for as long as you want, and on Sunday evening it a place of study, getting to know the AA big book. Then, on Wednesday nights, the same room transforms into a vibrant, energetic AA experience—a meeting filled with strength, hope, and connection.
This building, nestled in the heart of a busy town, is a small haven. Though it sits near a main road, you hardly notice the hustle and bustle as you sit in the tranquil garden sanctuary that surrounds it. The green space offers a peaceful escape, shielding you from the noise of the outside world.
When I first entered that room, I was completely broken. I had given up—on life, on people, and most of all, on myself. My go-to solution, alcohol, had stopped working, leaving me empty and washed away. But in that room, I found the help I needed to begin rebuilding my life. I started to rediscover who I truly am. I found friendship deeper than any I’ve known before, love and care that felt as strong as the kind I had only ever experienced from my parents, my spouse, and my children. Even more, I began to love who I am becoming.
It’s incredible to think that this space, Sylvan Grove, has been offering this healing for 50 years. Countless people have walked in broken, stayed, found salvation, and then turned around to help the next person who entered with the same pain. The cycle continues, proving over and over that it works—it really does.
In reflection, what makes Sylvan Grove so special isn’t just the room or the location. It’s the people and the love they give. The compassion shared in that space is what truly makes it a place of healing.
A Haven in the Heart of Altrincham
There’s a room in Altrincham, a quiet space,
Where troubled souls find solace, peace, and grace.
On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays, it’s serene,
A sanctuary from life’s tempestuous scene.
Yet on Wednesdays, it’s a vibrant place,
Where hope and strength find refuge in its embrace.
Nestled amidst the town’s bustling centre,
This haven offers respite, calm, and shelter.
A garden sanctuary shields it from the noise,
A peaceful haven where weary hearts rejoice.
I entered broken, lost, and filled with despair,
Alcohol’s grip had left me worn and bare.
But in this room, I found a helping hand,
A path to healing, a chance to stand.
I rediscovered who I truly am,
Found friendship deep, a love that’s strong and warm.
I began to love the person I became,
A transformation that eased the pain.
For fifty years, Sylvan Grove has stood,
A beacon of hope, a haven for AA’s good.
Countless lives have found salvation’s light,
And broken spirits have found new might.
It’s not the room, nor the location’s charm,
But the people’s love that keeps the healing warm.
The compassion shared, the kindness shown,
Make Silvern Grove a place where hope is known.
