“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” – Buddha
My recovery journey has been a profound exploration of presence. For years, alcohol was my escape, a way to numb the anxieties of the past and the uncertainties of the future. My actions were driven by impulsive desires, rarely considering the consequences. I lived in a haze, disconnected from the reality of the present moment. This disconnect manifested in countless ways – strained relationships, broken promises, and a general disregard for the well-being of others.
“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.” – Thich Nhat Hanh
Now, I strive to live in the “here and now.” I’ve learned to observe my thoughts and feelings without judgment, recognizing them as fleeting phenomena. This awareness allows me to choose my responses consciously. I’m mindful of my words, my actions, and the impact they have on those around me. I’ve become more compassionate, more patient, and more present in my interactions.
“Let go of who you think you are supposed to be. Be who you are.” – Lao Tzu
Living in the present moment doesn’t mean ignoring the past or the future. It’s about acknowledging their influence while choosing to respond from a place of groundedness and intention. I’ve learned to accept past mistakes without dwelling on them and to plan for the future without becoming anxious about it. My focus remains on the present moment, where I have the power to make choices that align with my values and contribute to the well-being of myself and others.
“Mindfulness means being aware of where you are right now, here and now. And that means being aware of your body, being aware of your breathing, being aware of your thoughts, being aware of your emotions.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn
Owning my impact in the present moment has brought a newfound sense of peace and purpose. I’m no longer a victim of my past or a prisoner of my anxieties. I’m an active participant in my life, consciously shaping my reality through mindful choices. I’m grateful for the opportunity to live authentically, to connect with others meaningfully, and to contribute positively to the world around me.
“The present moment is the only moment in which we can truly live.” – Eckhart Tolle
My recovery is an ongoing process, a continuous journey of self-discovery and growth. But I know that by staying present, by cultivating mindfulness in every aspect of my life, I can continue to heal, to evolve, and to make a positive difference in the world.
Owning The Moment
The haze lifts.
No longer a ghost,
haunted by echoes of the past,
or shadows of the future yet to be.
"The mind is everything. What you think you become."
The mind, once a battlefield of anxieties,
now a garden,
weeded of the poisons of regret and fear.
"The present moment is filled with joy and happiness.
If you are attentive, you will see it."
Attentiveness, a newfound sense,
a blooming awareness,
of the breath, the body,
the whispers of emotions,
the symphony of the now.
"Let go of who you think you are supposed to be. Be who you are."
No longer striving to fit a mould,
but embracing the unique tapestry of self,
flaws and all.
Past mistakes,
no longer anchors dragging me down,
but lessons etched on the soul,
guiding my path.
"Mindfulness means being aware of where you are right now, here and now."
Here and now,
a sacred space,
where choices are born,
not from impulse,
but from intention,
from a deep knowing
of the ripples that extend
beyond the self.
"The present moment is the only moment in which we can truly live."
Living,
not just existing,
but truly living,
consciously,
authentically,
a participant in the dance of life,
owning my impact,
one mindful breath at a time.
