A Match Made in Heaven: Football and Recovery

Daily writing prompt
What are you doing this evening?

Tuesday evenings are always busy at our house. My son has football practice, so it’s a quick bite to eat before rushing out the door to watch him train. Even though standing in the middle of a field isn’t glamorous, I genuinely enjoy watching him play. It’s great to see him work as part of a team and improve his skills.

Once I’m home, I like to settle down with some reading before focusing on the practices that have been crucial in my recovery. A key part of my evening routine comes from following the suggestions on page 86 of the AA Big Book. These guidelines help me reflect on my day and take steps toward self-improvement.

The passage from the AA Big Book encourages a nightly review of our thoughts and actions. It asks us to consider if we’ve been resentful, selfish, or dishonest, and if there’s anything we need to make amends for. It also reminds us not to dwell on negative emotions, as this could reduce our ability to help others. The review ends with asking for guidance on how to correct any mistakes we’ve made.

Reflecting on my day allows me to see where I can improve but also recognise the things I did well. Just as I watch my son get better at football through practice, I can see my own progress by following the AA suggestions. Working alongside others in the fellowship, with the support of my higher power, helps me continue to grow and become a better person.

Tuesday Evenings

Tuesday evenings, a whirlwind of activity,
Son off to football, a hurried bite.
Standing on the field, a simple joy,
Watching him play, his skills improve.

Home again, a book, a quiet space.
Practices, recovery, a nightly routine.
Page 86, the AA Big Book, a guide,
Reflecting on the day, a journey inside.

Resentment, selfishness, dishonesty,
Amends to make, a heart set free.
No dwelling on the past, a negative mind,
Helping others, a purpose to find.

Guidance sought, mistakes corrected,
Growth and improvement, a life directed.
Watching my son, a lesson learned,
Progress made, a spirit turned.
