"Adventurer standing on a rocky mountain summit, gazing at a majestic peak surrounded by clouds."

Progress Isn’t Always Linear

The journey of recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous is often likened to climbing a mountain. With each step, you gain a clearer perspective, a stronger sense of self, and a deeper connection to your higher power. As you ascend, you may find yourself exhilarated by the progress made, the challenges overcome, and the newfound freedom. However, it’s crucial to remember that this mountain isn’t conquered once and for all; it’s a continuous climb, with ups and downs along the way.

There may be times when, despite feeling like you’ve reached the summit, life throws unexpected challenges your way. You might find yourself slipping back a few steps, or even falling entirely. It’s in these moments of setback that the true strength of recovery is revealed. Instead of viewing these falls as failures, recognize them as opportunities for growth and learning. Just as a seasoned mountaineer doesn’t give up after a slip, you too can pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and continue your ascent.

Remember, progress isn’t always linear. It’s okay to take a step back, to reassess your path, and to seek support from your fellow AA members. The beauty of the program lies in its emphasis on honesty and humility. By admitting your struggles and leaning on the fellowship, you’ll find the strength and resilience to keep moving forward. Your journey is unique, and your pace is entirely your own. There’s no shame in taking things one step at a time, even if it feels like you’ve been on the climb for a long time.

Writing this has reminded me of a story I read once, I’m not sure when or where, but I remember the essence of it and the message it held, the following is the version of the story that lives in my head.

Four Travellers, One Mountain

Four travellers stood at the base of a colossal mountain. To Anna, its face was a sheer, imposing cliff, a daunting wall of rock that promised endless struggle. To Ben, it was a winding staircase, a series of challenges that, once conquered, would lead to an inevitable ascent. For Chris, the mountain was a labyrinth, a complex puzzle of peaks and valleys that needed careful navigation. And to Danny, it was a gentle slope, a gradual incline that invited a steady, persistent climb.

Each traveller, armed with their unique perspective, began their ascent. Anna grappled with the sheer face, her progress slow and arduous. Ben found himself tested at every turn, each step a victory. Chris was constantly faced with new paths, forced to make decisions at every junction. Danny, meanwhile, found a rhythm, a steady pace that carried him forward.

As they climbed, they would occasionally catch glimpses of each other. Anna, looking up, saw Ben’s determined figure and wondered how he could find such resolve in the face of such steep terrain. Ben, looking down, saw Chris’s intricate path and questioned the wisdom of such a convoluted route. Chris, in turn, envied Danny’s steady progress, while Danny questioned if his gentle slope would ever lead to the summit.

Days turned into weeks as they climbed. Their first perspectives began to shift. Anna discovered pockets of footholds in the cliff face, offering respite. Ben found that some of the steps were more like leaps of faith. Chris realized that the labyrinth was not without its shortcuts. And Danny met patches of rugged terrain that tested his resolve.

Eventually, they reached the summit together, each traveller having overcome their unique challenges. As they stood on the peak, looking out at the world, they realized that while their paths had been different, the mountain they climbed was the same.

And so, it is in life. We all face our own unique challenges, our own mountains to climb. What may seem insurmountable to one, might be a mere step for another. But in the end, the destination is the same for us all. The key is not to compare our journeys, but to find strength in our own paths, and to appreciate the unique perspectives of others. For in the end, we are all climbing the same mountain, striving for the same summit.

Ascent

A mountain looms, a promise of heights unseen,
a journey inward, a climb towards the clean.
Step by step, the path is worn,
a soul unfurled, a spirit reborn.

With every peak, a broader view unfolds,
self-knowledge deepens, with firm footholds.
Exhilaration soars on wings of grace,
as shadows retreat and sky fills the space.

Yet, summits conquered are fleeting dreams,
life's tempest rages, disrupting schemes.
A stumble, a fall, a heart filled with dread,
but courage prevails, lifting up the head.

No failure, just lessons, a chance to mend,
with fellowship's embrace, a steadfast friend.
Honesty's beacon, humility's guide,
carry on climbing, no matter the tide.

This mountain of self, forever to climb,
with each upward reach, defying time.
One step at a time, a steady pace,
finding strength within this sacred space.
