My beautiful wife Nikki recently gave me the most thoughtful gift for our 6th wedding anniversary. Knowing me so well, she chose a present that was absolutely perfect—a charming iron bee garden ornament. This delightful piece isn’t just decorative; it has a practical purpose too. It collects water in its wings, creating a small reservoir for bees and other insects to drink from. When I first unwrapped it, I was touched by how much care and attention she put into selecting something that truly resonated with my love for nature and gardening. The gift was more than just an ornament; it was a reflection of her deep understanding of my passions.
Given how much I adored this special gift, I wanted to find the perfect spot in the garden to display it—a place where I could see it easily from where I sit to work. With that in mind, I decided to take a trip to the garden center to find just the right setting for my new bee ornament. After browsing through various options, I picked out three beautiful pieces of Welsh slate and a selection of small alpines to create a naturalistic display. I chose a Bugle, or Ajuga, one of Nikki’s favorite plants, a house leek, or Sempervivum, believed to ward away bad spirits, and a micro mint, or Mentha requienii, to add a refreshing touch. Once I had arranged everything, I stepped back to admire the completed project. Seeing all the elements combined—slate, alpines, and the charming bee ornament—I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and happiness.
This project also made me reflect on the past few days spent with Nikki and our two youngest children, especially our trips to Tatton Gardens and Chester Zoo. We are all quite different in many ways, yet I’ve noticed that we’ve been finding more common interests recently. Reflecting on it even more deeply, I realize that it’s not just that our interests are converging; it’s also that I’ve become more open to seeing and appreciating the common ground we share. This shift in perspective has allowed me to cherish these moments even more, and I find myself loving every minute of our time together as a family.
A Bee’s Haven
A gift of love, a charming iron bee,
A thoughtful choice from, my sweet wife.
A haven for the buzzing, and tiny things,
A practical delight, a work of art.
With care she chose, a gift that spoke to me,
A love of nature, gardening's delight.
A symbol of her love, her understanding,
A treasure I would cherish, all my life.
A perfect spot I sought, a place to shine,
A garden haven, where it could be seen.
With slate and alpines, a display I'd make,
A Bugle, House Leek, and Micro Mint, a green.
A project completed, a sense of peace,
A family bond, a love that's deep and true.
With shared interests, a newfound connection,
A love that grows, a family through and through.
